What is Bitcoin Halving?
Every time 210,000 blocks are mined on the Bitcoin blockchain, which is approximately every four years, the block reward for miners is halved. This is part of the mechanism to limit the total supply of Bitcoin to 21 million coins, and halving is expected to continue until 2140, by which time all Bitcoins will have been issued.
Impact of Halving on Bitcoin Price
In the history of Bitcoin, there have been three halving events so far, and each of these events has been closely related to the bull market cycles of the entire cryptocurrency market. Historically, after each halving, the price of Bitcoin has risen rapidly within 6 to 12 months, reaching new all-time highs.
  • 2012-11-28
The first halving reduced the mining reward to 25 BTC per block, and the price of Bitcoin in the market rose from $12 to $1,217.
  • 2016-7-9
The second halving reduced the mining reward to 12.5 BTC per block, with the market value of BTC at $647 during the halving, which then skyrocketed to $19,800 by December 17, 2017.
  • 2020-5-11
The third and most recent halving reduced the miners' reward to 6.25 BTC. At that time, the price of BTC was $8,787, and it soared to $64,507, marking an astonishing increase of 634% compared to the price before the halving.
